Property Inspections

The collection and maintenance of a current and accurate property inventory is critical to the determination of uniform, fair market values. During an inspection, assessors gain entry to a property (if possible) and review the current condition, taking measurements and noting any changes on the property record cards used to determine assessed values. Such property inspections include:

  • Ongoing cyclical reinspections of the interiors and exteriors of all town properties, no less than every nine years, in accordance with Bureau of Local Assessment requirements. Assessors notify property owners by mail of scheduled inspection dates.
  • Routine inspections, initiated upon the issuance of a building permit, the transfer or sale of a property, or a tax abatement request. These inspections are also essential in tracking new growth, and determining interim and triennial property value adjustments dictated by changing market conditions.
